Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a particular fiscal note?
What if I don't know the bill number?

Searching for Fiscal Notes

There are now two ways to search for a Fiscal Note:

  • Bill Number Search
  • Text Search

Bill Number Search:

If you know what bill number your looking for you can now select the select the General Assembly and chamber you want to search, then enter the bill number (ex: 35 {do not use leading zeros}) and it will bring back all documents pertaining to that bill number. The search will show all versions of the fiscal notes published.

Text Search:

If you do not know the bill number or chamber but you know a topic, you can do a text search. Simply type in the topic that your searching for and it will return the documents that contain your criteria.

What if I don't know the bill number, can I still find the fiscal note?

The Text Search function allows for additional searches by key word.

When searching by key word, use the following guidelines.

Look for words with the same prefix. For example, in your query form type skate* to find skate, skating, skateboard, and so on. Search for all forms of a word. For example, in the form type drive** to find drive, driving, and drove. Refine your queries with the AND NOT keywords to exclude certain text from your search. For example, if you want to find all instances of income but not tax, write the following query:

  • income AND NOT tax

Add the OR keyword to find all instances of either one word or another, for example:

  • developmental or disabilities.

This query finds all fiscal notes that mention developmental or disability or both.
